In Strand Line, the coastline becomes a deeply personal emotional landscape. Growing up near the North Sea in northern Germany, Tolman’s connection to the ocean is rooted in memory, weather, distance, and the shifting atmosphere of coastal life. The triptych format gives the work a panoramic sense of openness, while layers of blue, gray, ochre, and pale light evoke the feeling of standing between land and water, past and present, belonging and longing. Rather than depicting a specific place, the painting reflects the emotional pull of the sea as a space of memory, solitude, and transformation.
